I am a strong supporter of public science literacy and hope to educate the public on science through mentorship, teaching and public outreach. I maintain a passion for chemistry, teaching and aim to inspire others. I am comitted to improving diverstiy, equity and inclusion in STEM via outreach to community college students, undergraduates and young graduate students.
RESEARCH INTERESTS
Epidemiological studies have shown strong relationships between particulate matter inhalation and detrimental health effects. Yet the causative agents in particulate matter and the underlying mechanisms of these health outcomes are still not understood. It is hypothesized that reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as superoxide, hydrogen peroxide and the hydroxyl radical play a role in the health effects from particle inhalation. I am interested in understanding the kinetics and mechanisms of ROS formation from particulate matter components and how it may relate to inflammatory responses from particle exposure. My research uses interdisciplinary methods to investigate the chemistry of ROS produced from particulate matter in physiologically relevant solutions. I am particularly interested in humic-like substances (HULIS) and their interactions with soluble iron in the lungs.
